Spa Colors

"Spa Colors"

Acrylic on Paper

I'm taking a little break from reality and playing around with a bit of abstract.  It's always good to experiment when it comes to art because you never know what you're going to stumble upon and create.  I like the colors as they remind of the sea and sky.  It's an abstract landscape.  Very soothing.

I was lucky enough to travel to France this past summer and on the back roads between Provencial villages there were fields of sunflowers.  I had to stop and take some photos.  This painting is the result of one of those photographs.  One of my friends bought it for his wife's birthday.  They were actually on the trip with us!  A wonderful memento to remember our wonderful weeks in France.  It's always nice when people you know like your art.  Here's to the holiday season!  Remember you too can purchase an original piece of art or a print or even notecards from my Etsy store.  You still have plenty of time to shop.  If not my Etsy store there are lots of other original handmade items there.

Fall on the Canal

Oil
$148.00

Last weekend I took a workshop by Maggie Siner.  She has a very different palette than I use.  We mainly worked on learning to draw shaped and use color.  It was really interesting.  I love her work.  I feel like there is always something to learn from taking a workshop or class from a different artist.  I painted this fall scene using her palette of oil colors.  I like how it turned out but I still think I like my more vibrant palette better.  I am going to try and incorporate a lot of her lessons in my paintings.  A good workshop.

Don't forget the holidays start next week.  It's never too early to shop.  Visit my etsy store for original paintings, giclees, prints, & notecards!  There is something for everyone in every price range $15 - $395.00.

Oil
© 2013 by Rebecca Croft

Always experimenting!  Here is a new landscape using thick impasto paint and bright colors.  I like how it turned out.  I seem to be getting more impressionistic which is what I want.  I'm drawn to color and shape not photo realistic art work.  I just finished a workshop with Maggie Siner that was very interesting and taught me a lot about color comparisons.  I hope to continue that study in January when I take a workshop by Trisha Adams who studied under Maggie but is more of a landscape painter.

Don't forget this weekends Ft. C.F. Smith art show.  Reception tomorrow night 6-8pm.  I'll be there from 6-7.  I'll have paintings, small shrink wrapped paintings and notecards.  There are 35 participating artists.  Paintings, pottery, woodwork, and notecards.  Stop by tomorrow or saturday 10-5, sunday 12-4.

A great weekend.  I spent 2 1/2 days in a Maggie Siner painting workshop.  There is always so much to learn about color, composition, and painting!  We're always a work in progress.  Stay tuned for some new exciting paintings.  This lovely painting will now reside in New York City.  I've had a good week with sales.  I sold 3 paintings.  I'm trying to get to 100 by the end of the year in my Etsy store.  I'm at 78 sold.  If you know anyone looking for original holiday gifts send them my Etsy link.  I have paintings, prints, giclees, and notecards for sale.

SOLD! Impressionist Tuscan Vineyard

SOLD!
Impressionist Tuscan Vineyard

This painting has a new home in Pennsylvania.  I originally painted this for my solo show at Piola Restaurant in Arlington.  I'm glad it's been sold.  I love the colors in this painting.  As you know purple & pink are some of my favorites.  I was inspired to paint this vineyard after my last trip to Italy.

Remember the holidays are just around the corner!  An original piece of artwork, a print, giclee, or notecards make lovely gifts.  Visit my etsy store and browse around.  I can make a print or giclee out of any of my paintings if you are on a limited budget.  Just drop me an email!

I just had to paint my new baby.  He really is The Great Gatsby.  He's so cute and sweet.  I wanted to paint him whimsically.  He's really black and white but that wouldn't be so fun to paint now would it.  I used the bright green to enhance the painting.  I plan on doing some more animals soon.  But I'm also going to paint some Christmas/Holiday paintings.  Let me know what you think!

I had my open studio last weekend and one of my friends commissioned me to paint this painting for her sister.  Her sister owns an organic farm in Maine and "Calvin & Hobbes" were her & her husband's pets.  This is her husband leading them back to the barn for the night.  Unfortunately, they have both passed away so she wanted a painting for her sister to remember them by.  I hope they love it!  Shipping it out wednesday.

Commission

I guess painting all those flowers last week paid off!  I got a flower painting commission out of it.  I painted this today from a photo that the client sent to me.  I'll be sending her photos of this before I ship it to make sure it's just like she wants it.  It was fun to paint.  I was going to paint outside today but the weather didn't quite cooperate.  I'm hoping it may warm up a little again next week so I get the opportunity to paint outside before the real cold sets in.  Here's hoping for more sales!

Remember it's the studio tour this weekend so please stop by my house on saturday to say hello.  I'll be painting all day!

SOLD! Grace Bay Beach

SOLD!
Grace Bay Beach, Turks & Caicos

© 2013 by Rebecca Croft

Another one of my paintings has found a new home!  This one went to New York City.  I painted this after I got home from Turks & Caicos in March.  What a beach.  If you've never been you should go because I've not found any other beach as perfect as this one.  It's white, soft, and 12 miles long.  You can walk forever on it.  I'm assuming the person that bought this might have walked or sat on this beach himself and is getting it as a memory of his trip.  Or maybe he dreams of going there.  Whatever drew him to the painting I hope he loves it.

Don't forget the Open Studio Tour this weekend.  25 artists studios will be open.  Stop by my house and see what I've been up to!  10am - 5pm.  More information on this link:  http://www.arlingtonartistsalliance.org/events.html

I really do hope you'll stop by and say hi.  I have lot's of small paintings, shrink wraps, notecards, etc. that would make great holiday gifts!

I painted this lovely painting of Venice after my first Dreama workshop.  It was the view from my hotel in Venice.  It was so fun to sit on our balcony and watch the gondola's coming and going.  We could sit, sip wine and enjoy the view.  I hope the lady that bought this painting enjoys it as much as I enjoyed Venice!

Harvesting the Hay

"Harvesting the Hay"

$225.00
© 2013 by Rebecca Croft

I don't know why I've gotten fascinated all of a sudden with the hay bales.  I saw lots of them starting when I was in France this summer.  There's something about the bales with the sun hitting them that captured my attention.  It's been interesting painting them with different colors to create the shapes.  I do really like how this one turned out.  It's one of my favorites from the last couple of weeks.  It's funny how as artists we have "favorite" paintings like I'm sure teachers have "favorite" students.   It's also interesting that the ones I like the most are not necessarily the ones that sell the most so that just goes to show you that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I have lots of flower paintings coming up which I don't usually paint but I got on a roll last week.

Also, don't forget the Open Studio Tour the weekend of Oct 26th.  Opening reception at the Northern Virginia Art Studio in Crystal City 5-8pm friday night and my studio along with 25 others open saturday from 10-5pm.  Please stop by and say hello.  I'll be painting all day!

Somehow no matter what I paint or what workshops I take I always come back to my favorite - landscapes.  There is something about creating nature on a canvas that really draws me in.  I've been diligent about painting everyday for the past few weeks and I do think you can tell by my new paintings that I'm really enjoying it.  I love skies & water!  I hope you like this one as much as I do.

"Sunflowers"

I painted this in 2012.  So glad that it FINALLY SOLD!  I've been on a roll the past week and have now sold 6 paintings.  I'm really loving it.  Nothing motivates my creative juices like selling my artwork.  I've been painting everyday.  Like anything else.  The more you do it the better you get.  I feel like I've created some great new paintings.  Stay tuned and you'll be seeing them.

Also, mark your calendars for the last weekend of October.  This is the weekend that I will be opening my studio on Saturday, Oct 26th for visitors.  I'll be part of the Arlington Artist Alliance 3rd Annual Gallery Tour.  You can visit over 15 artists galleries and view their work for sale.  This would be a great time to purchase some Christmas gifts early!

Another sale on Etsy.  It's been a good few days for sales.  Interestingly, this painting sold to a woman in Connecticut on Wednesday and the smaller 8 x 10 version of this painting sold to a man in Georgia on sunday.  I painted both about 6 months ago and then they both sell the same week to different people.  I'm getting back my groove.  I painted a really nice landscape today.  Keep watching.

You can have this painting through my Etsy store:

I painted this on canvas board so it can be popped into any photo frame easily or put on an easel tabletop.  I'm still dreaming about all of that wonderful wine I drank in France this summer.  I came across this close up of some grapes in a vineyard we toured and I had to paint them.  Aren't they scrumptious!  They look good enough to eat...... or make wine!  A lovely painting for any art collector. Remember art makes a great original gift.  Do you know a wine lover?  This would be perfect for a study, den, or kitchen.

Tuscan Flowers

$175.00

If you would like to purchase this painting it's in my Etsy store at the following link:

I'm still finding inspiration from my trip to Italy two summers ago.  Every time I paint from one of my photos it takes me back to that time and place.  It was magical to spend almost two weeks in Lake Como, Venice, and Tuscany.  If only we had the power of teleporting I could go there to paint whenever I felt like it!  I guess I'll just have to settle for my lovely photos.  That's why buying a piece of art as a memento of a trip is such a great gift because every time you look at it it will take you back there.  I know it's only the beginning of October but start thinking of your Christmas list.  Art is a great gift.

This has been a good day for sales!  Three paintings in one day is almost a record for me.  I also sold another one this week so that's four.  I'm hoping this is a trend.  My goal for this year was to hit 100 sales in my Etsy store by the end of the year.  I'm at 69 sales so that means I have to sell 31 paintings in 3 months.  I think it can be done!  I'm back to painting almost everyday and feel really good about what I'm creating.  Stay tuned for new paintings.

Today I feel like I've gotten my painting groove back.  It's like anything else.  You loose it if you don't use it!  It's always hard to get back into it after taking some weeks off.  This painting turned out better than I thought it would.  I love the loose painterly brush strokes and I feel that I captured the essence of the scene.  I love how I played the colors up and all around the painting.  This is what I strive for - a loose painting.  It doesn't always happen.  So I'm going to take a lunch break and get back into the studio and hope to paint another before the day is gone!

SOLD! SOLD! SOLD!

This painting perfectly captures the Kenyan landscape.  I was on safari there in 2012.  It was a magical place and a magical time.  This is my first international sale.  A lovely woman in Dublin, Ireland has purchased it.  She was specifically looking for an African landscape with these colors.  Isn't it wonderful that people can find anything they want on the internet!  She searched Africa & landscape on Etsy and found me.  I'm sure this painting will have a lovely home in Ireland.

View of Provence Lavender

"View of Provence Lavender"
12 x 12 on Canvas Board

I visited the most quaint walled village in Provence this summer called Les Beaux.  It was at the top of a huge hill and the village was built inside walls surrounded by the ruins of a castle.  All around the ruins were patches of Lavender.  Interestingly, we found out that lavender is not indigenous to France and was imported here several hundred years ago.  It really only grows high up on the hills in Provence.  We were lucky as it was in full bloom at the end of July and gorgeous.  I should be painting lots of new paintings including this beautiful plant!

August has been a slow month but it usually is!  This is my third sale of the month.  I'm always happy when I sell a painting that has been around a little while.  This is going to a customer in Baltimore.  It seems like I sell a lot of my paintings on Etsy to semi-local customers.  I do hope he likes it.  You never know when you sell on-line and they haven't seen it in person but I've only had two returns out of 65 sales so I think that's a good record.  I'm heading off to return my daughter to college and spend the last week of summer at the beach.  Back to daily painting in September.

A great day today.  I sold this original of Carolina Sunset today on Etsy.  Isn't it funny since I sold a print of this same painting about a week ago.  People really like this one.  I was in my studio painting another French scene of Provence when this sold.  It made my day.  I had to run down to the Gallery Underground and pick it up as it was hanging there.  I quickly shipped it out.  It's always nice to spend my day in the art studio.  I'm hoping this means that people are shopping again as August has been pretty slow.  Keep watching for my French paintings.  I'll be posting again soon.

Back from my fabulous trip to France and armed with so many great photos I was ready to paint!  And then I ended up sick for the whole week with a terrible cold.  But I had already committed to work at the Gallery Underground on Friday so I dragged my paints and board there and one of my photos and put myself to work.  In only a few hours I had transformed this canvas into a beautiful French Garden.  This was one of the views at my hotel in Provence.  I could easily spend a year in Provence traveling around all of the tiny villages taking photos and painting.  There are so many gorgeous old buildings, gardens, gates, window boxes, etc. that capture my imagination.  I will be painting France for the next several months I'm sure.  You can truly understand why the Impressionist movement began in France.  I hope you enjoy what I create.

Sold my first print while away in France.  I'm so excited.  Hoping that this side of the business will take off.  It's so easy as I just order the print from Imagekind and they ship directly to the purchaser.  I had a wonderful time in France and took over 800 photos.  I have so much new material for painting.  I can't wait to get started.  I'll be working at the gallery friday so will definitely be painting then.  Remember a print makes a great inexpensive art gift for someone if you can't afford a painting.

During my Dreama workshop in April I painted this gate.  That 12 x 12 painting sold on Etsy.  It also hung in the Gallery Underground where someone came in to buy it but it had already sold.  So I decided to paint it again only on a different size canvas.  You can never fully recreate the exact painting as it always turns out a little differently.  I think this one turned out lovely.  Hopefully, it will sell as quickly as the last one.  I'm off to France next week in hopes of gathering lots of material for many more beautiful French paintings.  I'll be traveling from Provence up to Burgundy and on to Paris and plan to take hundreds of photographs!  I'll be back in touch after I return.

After painting the commission of this I decided that I liked it so much I would paint it again only on a smaller canvas.  It looks very different from the 24 x 36 inch version.  I find that it is so much more fun to paint on a larger canvas.  But not so much fun to carry those around to shows!  Anyway, I do really like how this turned out.   It will be hanging in the Crystal City Gallery for the month of July so go take a look.  I'm off to the beach for two weeks tomorrow but will blog from there.

Sold another painting on Etsy Monday.  I'm well on my way to my goal for this year.  The woman that purchased this painting lives in Easton, Maryland but her parents own a second home on Bald Head Island.  This painting captured the view from the place we rented there several years ago.  It's a unique island with beautiful inland waterways and marshlands along with their wide white beaches on the ocean.  It's a wonderful place to paint.  I'll have to return one day.

Photo I used to paint Ocean View

I love Etsy.  You never know who you'll meet there!  I received an email from a very nice man in Boston who commissioned me to paint this painting of the view from his parents home.  I've included the photo that he sent to me so you can see what I painted from.  I love how it turned out.  I've not had a lot of experience painting rocks.  Truth be told I've kind of tried to avoid them because I heard they were so hard to paint.  I had so much fun painting them.  I was in a real groove today.  I just decided to look at each rock's shape and paint it based on the shape and the lights and darks.  Really when you boil it down that's what painting is.  Shapes and lights & darks.  I do hope he loves it.  I'll be shipping it to him in about a week once it's dry.  Send me your comments I'd like to know what you think.

This will be in my Etsy store next week.  I'm still working on perfecting my Dreama techniques.  I just love painting the French & Italian scenes.  I can't wait to get over to France this summer and get some unique photographs to paint from!  I'll be going out when the sun comes up to photograph houses, windows, doors, gates, gardens, etc.  The key to these paintings is to show how the light reflects and bounces.  I want to show the joy in these scenes.

I went to pick up my daughter from college this week and that precipitated the cleaning out of my attic so that I would have more room to store her things.  That caused me to move a dresser from her room to my studio which got me to cleaning everything out there as well.  I feel so productive!  My studio is really getting in shape.  I will be participating in the Arlington Artist Alliance Studio Tour again in October.  It's nice to get spring cleaning done.  I hope you all get motivated to do or try something new this week.

Dreama has the most interesting exercise the last day of her workshop.  She has each artist set up their easel & paints and then we each start a painting and every 5-10 minutes we rotate around the room to someone else's painting to work for another 5-10 minutes.  It's so much fun and so freeing!  So this painting actually has about 8 artists talent on it.  It's a conglomeration of talent.  It really let me focus on just putting a few pointed strokes in places as I didn't have much time at any easel.  I think I may use this technique in my own studio by setting up multiple easels with multiple canvas's and rotate around so that I have a fresh eye each time I come back to a painting.

If you're in town this weekend you should stop in the Underground Gallery as my friend Jane Coonce is having a reception for her solo show.  Reception is 5-8pm!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you mother's out there.

I'm still working hard on learning the Dreama technique on my new paintings but in the meantime I sold this little painting last night on Etsy.  It seems like lately I've been getting a lot of local buyers.  This customer lives in Washington D.C. and is coming to visit my studio to pick up her painting.  She purchased this as a gift for her husband to celebrate their anniversary.  They were married in the Carolina's.  I love it when people tell me why they are purchasing a piece of my artwork.  It makes me happy when someone is giving it as a gift.  I hope her husband likes it as much as she does!  Stay tuned for more Dreama type paintings.  I'm trying to paint something everyday.

Here is another one of my Dreama workshop paintings.  We begin drawing the painting with transparent orange paint and then block in the entire canvas with our transparent colors.  The second stage you can begin to use your opaque colors but in order to keep the sunlight in the painting use similar colors to mix and keep out the white that makes things cool.  For example to lighten the red use cadmium orange or yellow instead of white.  It really makes a difference.  Things glow using these colors.  I just love her palette & technique.  I hope to be able to translate it into the subjects I like to paint.  You can purchase this one from my Etsy store.

OMG!!! Another fabulous workshop this weekend by Dreama Tolle Perry.  I painted 4 new paintings and met tons of wonderful women who I hope will not only be future friends but mentors as well.  We had a great time.  It's so inspirational to attend a workshop by someone who really loves what they do.  So much joy was in the room.  It really was 3 perfect days (even if it was in the Comfort Inn).  I hope you like this cute paintings.  They are bright and cheery and just so springy.  You can check out my etsy store if you want to purchase any of them.  Please share my blog with your friends.  Happy spring.

Sold! Sold! Sold!

"Lavender Fields"
24 x 30
Oil
SOLD!

I sold this lovely Provence painting on Etsy yesterday!  I painted this for a solo show last summer.  It was at a large restaurant in Arlington with very high ceilings so I had to break out the large canvas's and get painting.  I titled the show "Summer Escapes" so all of the paintings were of places I have traveled.  It was a great show but I only sold 3 paintings.  I'm so happy to sell one of these larger paintings to make more room in my studio!  Remember I'll be at The Gallery Underground tomorrow night for the Animal Welfare League Reception.  Stop on by and say hello and have a glass of wine.
